Baldy Ridge Extension Tunnel Rehabilitation

TECK COAL / CAST IN PLACE CONCRETE, SHOTCRETE AND GROUT CONSTRUCTION

Project Overview

The BRE Tunnel Rehabilitation Project involved upgrading a 1,450 m underground conveyor tunnel supporting the BRE Pit development. The tunnel remained fully operational during construction and houses critical mine infrastructure including conveyors, utilities, and services. The work was required to enable future mining of the adjacent BR6 Pit while maintaining continuous production under an intensive shift schedule.

Project Scope

Multicrete Systems Inc completed concrete, shotcrete, and grouting works in a Class 1 Division 1 underground environment with high groundwater inflow (~1,500 m³/day). Specialized environmental controls were implemented, including CO₂ pH control, chromium monitoring, ferrous sulphate dosing, water diversion, and IVAC recovery systems.

Dry-mix concrete was conveyed 1,600 m underground and mixed on-site using air-powered systems before placement in 1.5 m lifts. Shotcrete was applied in controlled zones using custom access platforms and water management systems.

Following liner installation, 7,550 m³ of cellular foam grout was placed behind the lining using a colloidal mixing system, achieving approximately 120 m³/day production over two shifts.
